This is very possibly one of the weirdest looking fungi ever. This specimen is known as the bleeding tooth fungus (the bleeding part is obvious although the tooth part comes from special structures for releasing spores). The scientific name is Hydnellum peckii. The “blood” on this fungus has been found to act as quite a powerful anticoagulant and contains the chemical atromentin.
Oh and it’s also inedible. Just in case you were wanting to eat it. For whatever reason.My first thought was “WOW! That looks delicious!” and then I realized it was a fungus.
Whatever, still looks delicious.I actually thought this too… I didn’t think anyone else did.
Looks like a rotten pomegranate.
